An interview with Jess Garratt

What’s your name, where are you from, what do you do for a living?
My name is Jessica Garratt and I am from Manchester. I am currently a final year student at the University of Edinburgh, where I study History and Archaeology.
Which legs are doing, what role are you taking?
I am taking part in legs 1-4 which will take me from Falmouth to Tierra del Fuego.
What are your aspirations for the trip?
To sail across the Atlantic. I don’t know why but its something I have always wanted to do. I am so lucky that this opportunity came along to do it. I also really want to get back into sailing and I am sure im going to learn so much from this trip.
what are you most excited about about?
I am most excited for the adventure, meeting and working alongside new people in such environment and being outdoors
What are you most nervous about about?
Falling overboard and sharks.
What are doing leading up to the trip / after the trip?
From now until the trip I will be taking my final exams for uni, then im off to work as staff on an archaeology dig at Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. When i finish that in July, I will head back to Edinburgh to work the Fringe festival and the universities Freshers week, to scrape in the final pennies for the voyage.
Afterwards, i maybe (fingers crossed) going to work in Australia for 4/5months.
What will you miss most from home?
Ummm…we will have to see
